No matter how much you want to avoid it, beyond reducing the impact of a fall, an MTB helmet can save a life. Besides, have you ever witnessed or even suffered a fall from an ATV? At least in terms of shock, some are so violent that even the helmet could crack in two. What would happen without wearing a helmet in such circumstances?
In town, we often tend not to wear it out of habit or out of style. We consider that the speed is not important enough, that we do not risk anything. However, we cannot predict the future. And we’re not necessarily talking about an accident on the road. It could be a moment of inattention in a park, for example, and then all of a sudden, we find ourselves with all four irons in the air.
With an ATV, you don’t even have to remember how important wearing a helmet is. In particular, because you have to drive in off-trail areas, in the mountains, sometimes with roots or stones in the middle of the roads.
Beyond design, how to choose an MTB helmet? There are a few key points to consider before purchasing a bicycle helmet.
First, there is the composition of the helmet, interior, and exterior. We will have to rely on a solid structure if we want to be able to ensure its security. Also, it will be necessary to look at the attachment. What good is wearing a helmet if it is simply placed on your head? There is still aeration or form.
1. The size
First of all, I invite you to measure your head circumference not to make mistakes in the size. Even if, in principle, MTB helmets are adjustable, it is better to know this information.
In terms of European sizes, these are expressed in centimeters. A size S represents 53 – 58 cm. A size M is 56 – 57 cm, L is equal to 58 – 59 cm, and finally XL 60 – 61 cm.
So be sure to check that the helmet has an adjustable function that allows you to adapt the helmet’s shape to your skull.
2. The materials
The materials that make up the helmet are just as important on the outside as they are on the inside. Inside, the fabric is expected to have an antiperspirant cover. This is usually found with EPS, insulation called polystyrene. Indeed, when mountain biking, we start to sweat a lot depending on the stage.
The padding then must remain comfortable, of course, but it is better to clean it easily. In the products currently sold on the market, the padding is in principle removable. Finally, the internal structure must withstand shocks from the outside.
On the outside now, the helmet must be able to be flawlessly solid. This confidence can be found in the polycarbonate models.
3. The weight
Let it be said; we will tend to have more confidence in a product whose weight is quite heavy. A light model would not necessarily ensure resistance to violent shocks. It’s both true and false. A heavy helmet doesn’t mean it’s made of the right materials. And vice versa. An adult mountain bike helmet weighs on average 300 g.
Also, note that this is about your comfort. If the helmet is too heavy, you will necessarily support it less well during your mountain biking trips, especially if you are sensitive to neck and shoulder pain.
4. Some options
Several options have been added to MTB helmets to make your excursions safer. First, there is the classic LED extension light. So that we can see you at night or in the early morning. In the same vein, the reflectors are placed on the top and sides of the helmet. Thus, it will make you more visible on the roads.
